Walcha and District Historical Society Inc, New South Wales
The Walcha Historical Society is a not-for-profit organisation formed following a public meeting in 1962. The society is run by volunteers whose aim is to preserve the history of not only Walcha itself, but also the surrounding districts.
The society maintains the History Centre in a room behind the Walcha Library, per kind favour of the Walcha Council.
The management of the Walcha Museum and Pioneer Cottage is vested in the committee of the society, which is elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting.
The constitution of the society requires it to record and preserve those artefacts of historical interest relating to the town and district.
The History Centre is situated behind the council library at 42n Derby Street, Walcha.
The History Centre has family history archives; old family and historical photographs; old district maps; some census records; library of family histories and general history; letters and documents; cemetery records; and newspapers on film - all relating to the district and surrounding area and dating from 1850s.
The centre is open during library hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8.30am-1pm; 2-5.30pm.
