Created in 1981, the University Archives operates as the institutional repository for university records having legal, administrative, historical and ephemeral value.

Administrative structure

The University Archives functions independently within the Fryer Library.

Records management and collecting policies

The University of Queensland Archives, mandated by University policy, holds the official records of the University which are of permanent and enduring value, supporting accountability, business needs and community expectations. The university archives records date from the establishment of the University in 1910, and from 1897 for the former Queensland Agricultural College, now the University of Queensland (UQ) Gatton Campus.

The University Archives permanent records include administrative records, student and staff records, committee minutes and papers.
Amongst some of the major holdings are minutes of the University of Queensland Senate, the Academic Board and its predecessors, the Board of Faculties and the Professorial Board, and Faculty and school committees.
The University of Queensland Archives holds some significant photographic collections pertaining to the university along with an assortment of university related publications.

Open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm by appointment only.

Access conditions and requirements

Permission to access records held in the University of Queensland Archives must be obtained from the University Archivist. A formal request for access is required and researchers should contact the University Archivist for further information.

Given the confidential nature of the majority of material held in the archives, all requests must be forwarded to the University Archivist for review.

Reproduction services

Limited photocopying, up to 20 copies, is permitted at no charge; digital photography is allowed on a case by case basis.
