The York Society Research and Archive Centre, York, Western Australia

In 1968 an earthquake at Meckering, 40 kilometres from York, shook many historic buildings to the ground. As a result, a small group of determined citizens, recognizing the need to preserve the past and protect the surviving heritage buildings formed The York Society. Its principal aim was to revive, restore and cherish the history and architecture of this small and unique Australian country town.

The York Society manages the York Research and Archival Centre containing a large collection of published and documented material.

York is the oldest inland town in Western Australia, situated 97 kilometres east of Perth, and is the seat of the Shire of York.

Holdings include:

• Births, deaths and marriages
• Cemetery records for the York area
• Maps and plans of York and Districts
• Newspapers, late 1870s- present, eg Eastern Districts Chronicle, The York Chronicle (in hardcopy and film form)
• Copies of York Shire and Roads board ratebooks
• Reference books relating to families and the social and cultural history of the York district.

Thursdays only, 9am-2pm.

We are located in Ford Street within the York Society's Sandalwood Yards complex at the corner of Avon Terrace.

Parking is available.
