St Catherine's is the oldest independent Anglican girls' school in Australia, founded in 1856 by Jane Sophia Barker, the wife of Bishop Frederick Barker, to provide an education for the daughters of clergy (it was also known as the Clergy Daughters' School). Mrs Barker decided to call the school St Catherine's after Catherine of Alexandria, the patron saint of scholars.
The School Archives were established in 1988.

The school holds collections of memorabilia regarding Old Girls such as Dame Joan Sutherland (Soprano), Eirene Mort (artist), and Una Fielding (Scientist).
The Archives are stored in five repositories on site, which house 44 compactus bays with additional shelf storage.
