History

The Sisters of Charity of Australia Congregational Archives is the central repository for records and museum objects of the first Catholic female Religious order to arrive in Australia in 1838.

Established in 1989, the Congregational Archives has been staffed by professional lay staff since 1995.

The Congregational Archives holds material relating to the past and present ministries of the Sisters of Charity in four states – New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria and Queensland, mainly in the ministries of health, education, prisons, community care, the homeless, childcare, rural and remote, social justice as well as overseas missions in Papua New Guinea, and some countries of the Pacific, Asia and Africa.

Geographical and cultural context

The Archives also holds records, museum objects and textiles relating to individual Sisters, convents and communities of Sisters, as well as governance and administration of the Congregation.

Closed on public holidays and between Christmas and New Year.

Access is by completion of an access form. As it is a private Archives, some records may have access restrictions. A closed period of 30 years applies to most records.
