History

Prospect Local History Collection was opened in 1986 as part of the South Australian Jubilee celebrations. It has developed as a means of collecting and preserving materials documenting the history and cultural development of Prospect, promoting and communicating local identity, history, heritage and stories.

The boundary of the geographical area covered by City of Prospect includes the Adelaide suburbs of: Collinswood, Medindie Gardens, Fitzroy, Ovingham, Prospect, Thorngate, Broadview, Nailsworth, and Sefton Park.

Acquisitions must have distinct, verifiable connection to the City of Prospect and fit within the stated purpose of the collection and the collection areas outlined in Collection Development Policy.

Physical Items collected are: photographs; documents, including letters and journals; reports; drawings and plans; maps; oral histories; books, including all publications by the Prospect Local History Group; textiles; and three dimensional objects.

Access conditions and requirements

The Prospect Library, Local History Collection is a reference collection and is to be used within the Library only. Information can be copied at the discretion of the Local History Officer provided there are no copyright restrictions.

The collection is made available to the community including the general public, researchers and Prospect Local History Group in the Local History Room of the Prospect Library where collection items and records can be physically accessed.

Commitment to an ongoing digitisation project will also ensure that objects and documents are increasingly accessible and searchable. The library provides scans of images to individuals as requested provided there is no copyright restriction on the material. A small fee may be incurred to cover the cost of providing the image.

Research services

The Prospect Family History Group meets on the third Tuesday of the month and members are available to help research family history.

The Local History Officer (part-time) is available for help with the collection. Library staff are also on hand to assist with basic search requests.

Reproduction services

Copying services are available for a fee for books, journals and original records up to A3 size.
