The Port Macquarie Historical Society was founded in 1956 and since then has collected, and continues to collect, archival and museum materials relating to Port Macquarie and the adjacent districts.

As a general rule collecting is restricted to material connected to the local area. However, items of national or state significance are also accepted.

The collections are housed in buildings erected in the 1970s, attached to a former store erected in the 1830s.

The collection is comprised mostly of family and personal papers and business records. In addition there is a large collection of photographs, including negatives from the local newspaper. One collection (Annabella Boswell's Papers) is listed on the Australian Memory of the World Register.

The Museum is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 3.30pm (last entry). Appointments are necessary to view archival holdings.

The archival collections are located on the first floor. Access is only via stairs.

Assistance is provided to researchers with an appointment to view the archival collection onsite. Resources are not available to undertake research, but when possible attempts will be made to answer specific queries (from our collection only).

Photocopies and/or digital copies can be made. Some of the archival material (and most of the photographs) has been digitised, but is not available online.
