Narrabri and District Historical Society (and Gaol and Museum), Narrabri, New South Wales
The Narrabri Historical Society runs the Narrabri Old Gaol Heritage Centre. After the gaol's closure the Narrabri Historical Society was invited to house their collection in the Old Gaol section, and the museum opened in 1988.
The Old Gaol is part of an impressive complex of colonial government buildings which also includes the Office of the Court of Petty Sessions and the Court House. The architect, James Barnet, also designed the Sydney General Post Office. The gaol opened in September 1882 and operated as such for exactly 100 years. It now provides an interesting insight to how things were in the past.
Narrabri is a town in the North West Slopes, New South Wales, on the Namoi River, 521 kilometres northwest of Sydney.
Officer in charge: Secretary
The museum houses an extensive collection of artefacts of historical, archival and cultural significance. The centre houses a well documented range of early Australian memorabilia. The women’s cell is given over to the “Dalway Collection”, a collection of documents, uniforms, paintings and other articles from an influential Irishman who travelled to Australia in the early 1800s.
Members of the Narrabri Historical Society have indexed over 30,000 entries in the family history section of the Old Gaol Heritage Centre.
