History

The University Historical Archives is a repository for records and artefacts relating to the activities and experiences of La Trobe University and its antecedent institutions, dating as far back as the late 1800s.

La Trobe University opened for students in 1967, the third university to open in Victoria. It now has a network of campuses, in Melbourne and in Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Mildura, Melbourne City (Collins Street), Shepparton and Sydney.

The purpose of the archives is to:

  • Provide a secure and accessible home for administrative records and items the University is required by law to retain for specified periods of time.
  • Develop a collection of records and artefacts that provide a unique insight into the history of the University and its antecedent institutions.

Administrative structure

Officer in charge: Archives Officer
The Repository, Publications and Archives team in the Library is responsible for the management and development of the University Historical Archives.

Records management and collecting policies

The University Archives is interested in any collections that relate to the University, staff who have taught at the University, business partners of the University and any antecedent institutions of the University. The collection includes:


  • meeting papers of University committees
  • strategic plans, policies, procedures, guidelines and correspondence
  • theses
  • photographs
  • artefacts such as uniforms and practicum utensils
  • personal papers
  • records and artefacts from antecedent institutions such as the Bendigo School of Mines, the Northern District School of Nursing, the Bendigo Teacher's College, the Lincoln Institute of Health Sciences, the Bendigo College of Advanced Education, etc.

Records and Archives Services (RAS) maintain copies of all La Trobe University publications. RAS are currently indexing and digitising publications to allow for increased accessibility to information in the collection. Contact archives@latrobe.edu.au for further information.
