Historique

Griffith University, Brisbane's second university, was constituted by the Queensland Parliament in 1971 and takes its name from Sir Samuel Walker Griffith, a former Queensland Premier and Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia. On the 10th March 1975, Griffith University began teaching at our foundation campus at Nathan. There were four foundation Schools - Australian Environmental Studies, Humanities, Modern Asian Studies and Science.

By the late 1980s, the Australian Government had decided that the tertiary sector in Australia needed restructuring and set about an agenda of forced institutional amalgamations. This meant that by the beginning of 1992, our university had grown from a compact one campus institution - to a major Australian university with four campuses that incorporated the following teaching organisations:

  • Mount Gravatt Teacher's College - Mount Gravatt campus,
  • Gold Coast College of Advanced Education - Gold Coast campus,
  • Queensland College of Art and Queensland Conservatorium - South Bank campus

Our fifth and final campus (Logan) opened in 1998 and was established to specifically address the interests and needs of potential students in the Logan City and surrounding areas. For further information about the history, see https://griffitharchive.griffith.edu.au/our-history/

The Griffith Archive tells the Griffith Story - which is the history of Griffith University. The Archive shares the Griffith story in a number of ways including making its collection publicly available on the Griffith Archive website - griffitharchive.griffith.edu.au.
