History

At the first Boy Scout Rally held in London in 1909 Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, was surprised by a number of girls who insisted they wanted to be Girl Scouts. He agreed that something was needed for the girls and in 1910 the Girl Guides Association was formed.
From as early as 1909 girls in Australia were forming guiding groups and by 1920 Girl Guide Associations had been formed in six states. In 1926 the State Associations federated and formed a national organisation, which became a founding member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1928 (see https://www.girlguides.org.au/about/guiding-past-present/history-of-guiding/).
Girl Guides offers girls aged five to 17 access to a great variety of activities throughout the year. Guides helps girls develop their skills in a safe environment while having fun and finding friends. The Guides aims to empower girls and young women to grow into confident, self respecting and responsible community members.
