History

Founded in February 1975 to safeguard the permanent value records of the University of Newcastle, the University Archives within the Auchmuty Library holds some 2,000 shelf metres of priceless manuscript material dating from the year 1826.

Many important and valuable research collections relating to the region have been deposited in the archives including:

  • The Pender Archive
  • Records of the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle
  • The Percy Haslam Collection.

In addition, the University Archives acts as a State Archives Regional Archives Centre. These centres give physical context to regional State archives by keeping them within the communities where they were created and give those communities ready access to their archives. This includes archives from a range of public offices such as Local Land Boards, Schools, Councils, Police and Local Courts. (See State Archives and Records NSW - Newcastle Regional Archives Centre (1))
