Historique

There are three main parts to the Cohuna and District Historical Society:

  • Archives Centre (the brick building)
  • Museum (the old Scots Church)
  • Trash and Treasure (the old Scots Hall).

The society was formed in April 1970. In 1982 the Cohuna Historical Society Co-operative was formed. It purchased the Scots Church and Hall (following the formation of the Uniting Church) to display and store the extensive collection of exhibits, photographs and records. The Cohuna Historical Centre was officially opened on 17 November 1984. The Co-operative was dissolved in 1991.

The Archive and Photographic Collections are now housed in the purpose built Archives Building (adjacent to the Old Church Building), opened in 1992.

The Old Church Building has become the Museum for exhibits and special displays.

Contexte géographique et culturel

Cohuna is located about 3 hours north of Melbourne, situated on the Gunbower Creek. Major Mitchell's trails are a large part of the local history, but being situated close to the Murray River and associated wetlands has also given Cohuna a rich history in agriculture.
