The Mitcham Local History Service was established by the City of Mitcham in 1986 to preserve and promote the history and heritage of the Mitcham district. The Mitcham Local History Collection has been created to collect, collate, catalogue and store information concerning the City of Mitcham to archival standards.

The collection consists of historical information about any aspect of the City of Mitcham.
The collection is predominately paper-based and includes:
• Publications (biographies, histories, etc)
• Directories and electoral rolls
• Historical research files
• Local newspapers
• Maps and plans
• Local Cemetery records and indexes
• Old council minutes, correspondence, reports and indexes
• Over 4000 photographs including special collections
• Rate assessments, Council surveys and building applications
• Local school and organisations’ records and histories
• Family histories including letters and diaries
• Oral histories
Open Tuesday-Thursday 9am to 1pm.

Short interview with staff required. One week's advance notice of visit and proof of identity required.
General reference assistance and referral to paid researchers available. Introductory brochure available.
Copying services available.
