History

The Brookton and Districts Historical Society was formed in 1976. It manages the Brookton Museum and Heritage Centre, housed in the original Police Station and Quarters building. With the assistance of the Shire Council, the society took possession of the building in 1984 and opened the Museum in 1986.

Brookton is a town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, 138 kilometres from Perth. It is within, and is the seat of government for, the Shire of Brookton.

Buildings

The Police Station, now used by the society, was built in 1913 using locally made bricks. It closed in 1980 when the police moved to a new building. For further information, see http://inherit.stateheritage.wa.gov.au/Public/Inventory

Holdings

The collection includes extensive archives and oral histories which are available for family research. It includes minute books and papers of local organisations, brief notes on some individuals and families, photographs of a wide range of local places, people and activities - work and social.

The exhibitions reflect the lives of people, businesses, sporting and community groups associated with the district. The Charge Room/Office houses a permanent exhibition on the history of the police station and its officers.
