The Woodend and District Heritage Society was formed in 1977. The society began computer indexing in 1985 and developed its own software, Heritage I. Also in 1985, the first edition of Heritage News, the Society’s newsletter, was published.
The Woodend Court House was officially handed over to the society as its headquarters in 1989 and in 1993, the society’s collection was moved into the Court House. After a fundraising campaign, and with a grant from Heritage Victoria, in 1997 an extension to the Court House was built to house the growing archive.
The archive contains documents, maps, newspapers and photographs from the district that once formed the Shire of Newham and Woodend (including Ashbourne, Hesket, Campaspe and, until 1886, Rochford). Copies of local newspapers, including the Woodend Star from 1888-1970 have been digitised. Photographs are held of people and places relating to Newham and Woodend dating from the 1870s.
