The W L Crowther Library was developed by Dr W E L H (later Sir William) Crowther and presented by him to the State Library of Tasmania in the period 1964 to1981.

Dr Crowther's collecting ranged across all aspects of Tasmanian history and culture. Highlights include:
- Crowther family business, medical, personal papers, c1825-1980
- Sir William Crowther World War I diaries and photographs, 1914-1919
- Logs of Tasmanian whaling and other vessels, c1813-1910
- Derwent Bank/Charles Swanston: business records, c1828-1850
- Dr Edward Swarbreck Hall: anatomical drawings, c1850.
