The University Archives were established by the Council of the then Victoria University of Technology in 1992 in co-operation with the Office of the University Secretary and Registrar. The role of the Archive was 'to preserve the records and associated materials of the University and its predecessor institutes [sic] in compliance with the Public Records Act 1973 and as a service to future researchers.' Records date from 1916 with the establishment of the Footscray Technical School. They document the University's continuing relationship and engagement with its local community.

The VU Archives hold records that document the history, policies, administrative and educational activities and functions, mission and achievements of Victoria University and the previous institutions from which it has developed over time.
Papers of meetings of University Council and Committees, historical course handbooks, curriculum and assessment material, reports, awards, campus development documentation and regalia, etc are held in the Collection. The Archives also hold some private papers associated with University academics and other persons associated with the University and its predecessors, including schools, technical colleges and other vocational and higher education institutions.
The Archive holds records and items in formats including written and published documents, photographs, plans, audio visual material, physical items that document teaching programs, histories, policies, activities, achievements and contributions associated with:
Open Monday to Friday 9am-5pm. Access is by appointment with the University Archivist.
Visits to the VU Archives can be arranged by prior appointment.
Access and use of material held in the Archives complies with Victoria University Archives policies and procedures, and conditions relevant to some specific collection items and materials.
Reference and research assistance is available. Queries can be made by email or telephone.
Copying and reproduction can be arranged on request, in accordance with Access and Preservation guidelines.
Some archival material may be available form time to time in the form of exhibitions and displays at other Victoria University locations and campuses.
