In the post-war era of development and innovation, the then New South Wales University of Technology established a division in Wollongong to train the engineers and metallurgists of the local steel industry. That institution grew and evolved, and in 1975 legislation was passed in the Parliament of New South Wales, establishing the University of Wollongong as an independent institution.
The University of Wollongong is proud of the rich history that has developed since those first classes were held in 1951. An official Archives Policy was proclaimed by the University Council, on 1 January 1975.

The Archives team manage, preserve and provide access to physical and digital archival materials relating to:

• the corporate and social history of the University of Wollongong
• materials of historical significance to the Illawarra region
• materials of relevance to our teaching and research.

• Percy and Renata Cochrane (Papua New Guinea), 1934–1979: Sound recordings and photographs (4m).
• Stuart Piggin - Faith of Steel and Mount Kembla Mine Disaster: Research materials (5.4m).
• Theatre South, 1980-2002 : Theatrical production records and business records (15m).
• Reginald Francis Xavier (Rex) Connor (1907-1977): Correspondence, reports (40m).
• Chamber of Manufactures of New South Wales, 1912–1970 (80m).
  Quantity: approx. 1534 linear metres.

Appointments are available during business hours - Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.

An appointment time should be arranged in advance of a visit. Priority assistance will be given to University of Wollongong staff and students.

Some collections may have access restrictions placed upon them. Archives staff will assist you in obtaining the necessary permissions for access. Please allow extra time for this process to be undertaken.

Archives' staff can provide advice and guidance about the University of Wollongong Archives collections. You are required to conduct your own lengthy research or obtain the services of a professional researcher.

Archives staff undertake limited scanning/ photocopying on request at no charge. Clients are encouraged to bring a digital camera to take their own photographic copies of items where applicable. Where possible some scanned items are also subsequently made freely available online.
