The Linnean Society of New South Wales was founded in 1874 and incorporated in 1884. This was due in large part to its first President, Sir William Macleay (1820-1891). He provided the Society with its original accommodation and staff, set up a library and established the journal, Proceedings (1875).
The society offers an annual research fellowship to University of Sydney graduates; offers grants to support research projects; publishes the journal, Proceedings, and a newsletter; holds occasional symposia on natural history subjects; and established the biennial Sir William Macleay Memorial Lecture.
