The Tasmanian Archives preserves the documentary heritage of Tasmania’s government and people, past and present. Consisting of the Tasmanian State Government and community archives, these irreplaceable resources are preserved and made available online and in person. This allows people anywhere in the world to connect with Tasmania’s memory, identity and history.

It has been known previously as the Archives Office of Tasmania; Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office, Hobart (TAHO); LINC Tasmania.

As at 2017, TAHO, was a business unit that sitting under the overall management of LINC Tasmania. LINC Tasmania managed the State reference library and statewide lending library network. TAHO was lead by the State Archivist and includes three key business units:

• Office of the State Archivist (policy, strategy, government recordkeeping)
• Collections (transfers, description, digitisation, conservation), and
• State Library and Archives Services (access and reference).

Coverage of the whole of Tasmania including islands. The Antarctic region is also covered due to its close connection with the State.

Regulates Tasmanian state and local government record creation and preservation in line with the Archives Act 1983 (Tas).

Tasmanian State, Local Government and Statutory Authorities' records covered by legislative prescription.

Public access is through the Hobart building or the Launceston LINC (for Launceston Local Studies Collection items). A repository is also located at 2A Chardonnay Drive, Berriedale, Hobart.

The records date mainly from the 1820s to the present. Of particular significance among nineteenth century records are those of the Colonial Secretary's Office and the Convict Department. Records are also held from a variety of Tasmanian non-government organisations, individuals, companies, associations and societies.

Open Monday to Thursday 9.30am-6pm
Friday 9.30am-7pm (microfilm and History Room material not available after 6pm)
Saturday 9.30am-2pm.

Registration is required to view original material including all Tasmanian and special collections.

Please bring photographic identification to register.

Closed period of 25 years applies to most records but may vary. Access to records not normally available for research can be gained by application to the creating agency or State Archivist.
