History

The Royal Historical Society of Queensland was established in 1913. It has collected historical records and published a Journal every since.

The Library comprises the Welsby Library of Australiana bequeathed in 1939 and Queensland history manuscripts and books collected by the Society. The Society's Journal, the Queensland History Journal is published quarterly.

The Society's objects are the study and promotion of the history of:
(i) the State and the former Colony of Queensland;
(ii) the Commonwealth of Australia;
(iii) the adjacent islands of the Pacific;
(iv) other matters of general historic interest related to the above;
(b) The collection, preservation, restoration, registration, organisation, presentation, exhibition, management, exchange, sale, or other appropriate handling of material for such study, including but not limited to:
(i) letters, manuscripts, recordings, diaries and documents of any kind;
(ii) personal narratives of explorers, early settlers and other appropriate persons;
(iii) maps, charts, drawings, photographs, pictures, films, plans, digital and other electronic records.

Commissariat Store Building (oldest habitable building in Queensland). The library area is air-conditioned.
The Society has some library materials stored in a suburban building which is air-conditioned.

Letterbooks of some companies and pastoral stations and many personal manuscripts.

Open Thursdays 10am-4pm or, in some cases, by appointment.

Accessibility

Disability access to the building. William Street is a central business district street. The Commissariat Store is near the Queen Street Bus Station and is walkable from the Cultural Centre.

There are modest fees for copying. Members of the Society have free access and visitors pay a daily fee.
