The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) is an independent public company and is accorded national status as a training institution by the Australian Government. NIDA delivers education and training in the higher education sector in the dramatic arts that is characterised by quality, diversity, innovation and equity of access.
Established in Sydney in 1958 and enrolling its first students in 1959, NIDA has been a driving force in the growth and development of Australia’s performing arts for over fifty years. Having produced some of the greatest figures in Australia’s dramatic history, NIDA is nationally and internationally renowned for its talented, inventive, diverse and passionate artists and their significant contribution to Australia’s cultural identity.
NIDA’s focus on practice-based teaching and learning provides a strong foundation for graduate employment across a broad range of performance contexts.
It continues its historical association with the University of New South Wales and maintains strong links with national and international arts education and training organisations especially through the Australian Roundtable for Arts Training Excellence and industry partners such as theatre, dance and opera companies, festivals and film and television companies.
The NIDA Archives is open to NIDA staff and students and to external researchers, subject to specific access or donor conditions.
