The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) is a Commonwealth authority established under the National Gallery Act 1975 (Cth). The Act empowers the Research Library and Archive to:
Collect, and make available, information on the visual arts.
Make available services in relation to the visual arts including the carrying out of investigations and the giving of advice.
Arrange for, or to assist in, research into matters pertaining to the visual arts.
The principal responsibilities of the Research Library and Archives are to inform, educate and engage. These collections exist to aid and encourage in-depth research into the history of Australian arts, its business and industry activities, and the social and recreational life, politics and contemporary concerns of Australian artists.

The Research Library and Archive Collection Development Policy addresses building on existing strengths, filling gaps in these areas, and extending the collections for scholarly research.
The collections of the Library and Archive support the requirements of the National Gallery’s curatorial, education, conservation and research staff, and the work of visiting scholars. The Library’s mandate extends as well to the national and international scholarly communities, and to a varied clientele of museum professionals, students, artists, journalists, collectors, dealers and the general public.
The collections emphasise advanced research, but user needs are supported at the general inquiry level.
