History

The John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library (JCPML) which opened in February 1998, recognises the contribution to Australian society of war-time prime minister and international statesman, John Curtin (1885-1945). He was prime minister from 1941 to 1945.

It is Australia’s first prime ministerial library and is situated on the Bentley campus of Curtin University in Perth, Western Australia. The JCPML aims to advance knowledge and enrich culture by providing a focus for research and educational programs which engage Curtin staff, students and the wider community.

The John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library (JCPML) is managed as part of Curtin University Library Special Collections. It is located in a separate facility at the Bentley campus and staffed by two members of the University Library staff.

Records management and collecting policies

The JCPML is a specialist research and educational facility which collects material that documents the history and politics of Australia relating to the life and work of John Curtin. The collection is being actively developed to include the broader themes of the American-Australian relationship, post-war reconstruction, foreign policy, social and political history, and prime-ministership as an office.

The JCPML collection includes personal papers, oral histories, photographs, film and sound recordings, copies of official records, memorabilia, artworks and other archival material.

JCPML Reading Room: Open: Monday to Friday 10am-2pm or by appointment.
Closed public holidays, between Christmas and New Year and during University shutdown period.

To avoid inconvenience it is recommended that an appointment is made prior to visiting. Proof of identification is required to access archival material.
