Flinders University was established by an act of the South Australian Parliament in 1966 as The Flinders University of South Australia, on a campus in Bedford Park, Adelaide.
From the start, the university had close links with the Bedford Park Teachers' College, which was located on the Sturt side of the campus. After several name changes for that College (the last being the South Australian College of Advanced Education), and continuous collaboration with the University, it was absorbed into Flinders University proper in 1991.
Flinders University was also instrumental in the building and management of the Flinders Medical Centre, which was opened in 1976 as the first Australian integrated University medical school and hospital.
Currently, Flinders University has a second campus at the Tonsley Science Park, a presence at Victoria Square in the Adelaide central business district, and various teaching and research locations in rural South Australia and the Northern Territory.
