The college was originally opened in 1965 as St Paul's College, a Catholic secondary school for boys. The college was founded by the Society of Mary (the Marianists), who withdrew from the administration of the college in the mid-1980s. In 2008 a new co-education campus of the college was opened in Point Cook, and the two campuses together became known as Emmanuel College. (See the website for further history of the college.)

Emmanuel College comprises the Years 7-12 co-educational Notre Dame Campus at Point Cook and the Years 7-12 all-boys St Paul’s Campus at Altona North.

The Emmanuel College Archives, established in 2000, seeks to gather records and objects that embody the history of St Paul's and Emmanuel College.

Student and staff records, administrative records, architectural drawings, school publications, photographs, video recordings, uniforms, trophies and other ephemera.

Proof of identification is required for personal records. All requests must be approved by the college administration.
