History

Volunteer members of the Deniliquin and District Historical Society operate the Society's Museum in the former Police Inspector's Residence, built in 1879, next to the scenic Edward River.
Museum attractions include shearing equipment, police records, historical photos, newspapers, items relating to the history of Deniliquin town band, Picnic Races, Red Cross, a War Veterans display of memorabilia and an exhibit of Historical Costumes.

The Society continues to seek books, photographs, manuscripts, maps, diaries and other records relating to the local district from the general public.

Holdings

The society collects historical documents, photos, books and objects and has a large collection relating to local history. Holdings include, for example:

  • Over 3000 photographs of early life in Deniliquin and district.
  • Copies of the Deniliquin Pastoral Times, 1859-1979. A detailed index of names and events, 1859-1912 and a general index for issues upto and including 1979 have been compiled.
  • Police records
  • Complete burial records for Deniliquin General Cemetery and information on cemeteries of surrounding towns and district properties.
  • List of all hotels recorded for Western New South Wales since settlement, with proprietors and relevant dates.
