Named after Australia's second Prime Minister (Alfred Deakin), Deakin University was formally established in 1974 under the Deakin University Act 1974 (Vic). Deakin was the fourth university in Victoria and the first to have a regional campus. It was one of the first universities in the country to specialise in distance education.
