Named after Australia's second Prime Minister (Alfred Deakin), Deakin University was formally established in 1974 under the Deakin University Act 1974 (Vic). Deakin was the fourth university in Victoria and the first to have a regional campus. It was one of the first universities in the country to specialise in distance education.

The appraisal, selection, custody and preservation of the official records of the University, including the records of Council and other committees of the University, and records of the academic and administrative divisions of the University for the purposes of present and future scholarly research. Includes records of antecedent institutions including the former:

Personal papers of significant university administrators and academics are collected and maintained.
