The Christian Brothers began work on the future governance of their schools in the late 1990s, culminating in the decision to establish Edmund Rice Education Australia in 2007, at the same time as the Brothers established the Oceania Province. In subsequent years Edmund Rice Education Australia was constituted as an independent body in both civil law and church law and it now has full responsibility for over 50 schools and learning centres across Australia.
In August 2016 it was announced that the Christian Brothers' Province Archive and Records Centres would be integrated. The then Province Archive and Records Repositories located in:
The archives holds records of the Marist Brothers’ Provinces of Star of the Sea, Australia and the predecessor Melbourne and Sydney Provinces and also records of the Brothers’ work in Oceania.
Records include administrative records, for example: minutes of meetings, contracts and deeds, correspondence of the Province leadership team, reports, newsletters and photographs, historical research into the story of the Brothers and their foundations, plus personal records of Brothers living and deceased. Records are also kept of former Brothers of the time they were in the Order.
The extensive photographic record covers aspects of the life of the Provinces mentioned above. There is a small collection of memorabilia associated with individuals and schools.
