The Camden Historical Society was formed in 1957 and opened the Camden Museum in 1970.

The society is located in the former Cowpastures district of colonial New South Wales (pre-1840). The township of Camden was established in 1840 as a private town on the Macarthur family pastoral property of Camden Park Estate. The town was the centre of the Camden district from 1840 to1973.

Since 1973, the Camden township has been located in the Camden Local Government Area (LGA) which makes up a part of the Macarthur region along with the Campbelltown LGA and the Wollondilly LGA.

The society is an incorporated body in New South Wales.

President, Secretary, Treasurer, General Committee. It is a voluntary organisation.

The Camden Historical Society aims to tell the stories of the Camden district through its archives, displays, artefacts, lectures, publications and public education at the Camden Museum. Its archives policy is used to support this role.

The society manages the archives and collection of the Camden Museum.

The society has an archive of ephemera, manuscripts, memorabilia, clippings and images. There is a small library of local published resources.

Thursday to Sunday 11am-4pm or at other times by appointment at Camden Museum, 40 John Street, Camden.

Research assistance is available upon request and advice of advance notice of one week of visit is advisable, together with details of the nature of the enquiry. Proof of identity is required. No borrowing is permitted. Minimum age is 18 years.
