The Shire of Knox Historical Society was established in 1965. It:
Compiles and maintains historical records of the Knox District and displays historical artefacts and photographs
Provides and disseminates information to students, researchers and the community and publishes material
Participates in local community celebrations and organises meetings
Works in conjunction with other historical societies and museums The Society runs the Ambleside Park Museum, a local history museum housed in a century old farmhouse, with displays and a large photographic collection. The history of the district, which includes the suburbs of Bayswater, Boronia, Ferntree Gully, Knoxfield, Knox Gardens, Lysterfield, Rowville, Scoresby, Studfield, The Basin, Upper Ferntree Gully, Wantirna and Wantirna South. This includes the Knox municipality (1963-1969), the former Shire of Ferntree Gully (1889-1963), the former Scoresby Riding of the Berwick Shire (1863-1889) and pre local government times in the above areas.

The Knox Pioneer Index is a computer database containing information about pioneer families in the Shire of Ferntree Gully. Searches for family history information on the Knox Pioneer Index will be made for a small fee. Additional information about Ferntree Gully Shire pioneer families is always welcome. Contact the Knox Historical Society Inc for further information.

The Ambleside Park Museum is open Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays 1-4pm and at other times by appointment. A limited research service is available at the Museum on Sundays, 1-4pm.

The Knox Historical Society Inc. offers a research service for people interested in local history. The Resource Centre is closed until further notice. However, research queries can be made:
at the Ambleside Park Museum; or
via email to khs@relics.com; or
