The Australian War Memorial combines a shrine, a world-class museum, and an extensive archive. The Memorial's purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war. Its mission is to assist Australians to remember, interpret and understand the Australian experience of war and its enduring impact on Australian society.

Access to Commonwealth records held by the War Memorial comes under the Archives Act 1983 (Cth). Official research may be carried out by authorised departmental officers.
Access to non-government records depends on the donor's authorisation.
Researchers who wish to request material must register as a client. As collections are held offsite, it may take some time to retrieve material and so we strongly recommend that you provide at least two weeks’ notice of your visit.
